The Dos of Shapewear Care
1. Wash After Every Wear (When Needed)
While shapewear doesn't always require daily washing, it's essential to clean it regularly, especially after long wear or sweating. Washing helps remove body oils, sweat, and bacteria that can break down the fabric over time. if worn for shorter periods or in low-sweat conditions, washing after every two or three wears may suffice.
2. Hand Wash When Possible
Hand washing is the safest method to clean shapewear. Fill a basin with lukewarm water, add a small amount of gentle detergent, and let the shapewear soak for 5–10 minutes. Gently rub the fabric to remove dirt and rinse thoroughly.
3. Machine Wash With Care
Always use a mesh laundry bag when washing your shapewear in the machine to prevent snagging or stretching. To reduce wear and tear, use cold water in a delicate or lingerie cycle.
4. Air Dry Flat
After washing, lay your shapewear flat on a clean towel or drying rack to air dry. This prevents the fabric from losing shape and elasticity, which can happen when exposed to high heat in dryers.
The Don’ts of Shapewear Care
1. Avoid Using Fabric Softeners
Shapewear may become less effective at providing compression if fabric softeners leave a residue on it. Over time, these products may weaken the fabric and cause it to lose its elasticity.
2. Steer Clear of Dryers
Dryers can weaken the elasticity and damage shapewear. To preserve the fabric's quality and the fit of the garment, always let it air dry.
3. Avoid High-Heat Washing
Hot water can shrink shapewear or cause the fabric to lose its elasticity. Always use cold or lukewarm water to clean your shapewear.
4. Don’t Overstretch During Wear
While shapewear is designed to stretch and provide support, pulling it too aggressively during wear can damage seams and fabric. Always take care when putting it on or taking it off to avoid unnecessary strain.
